Natural Relief for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

By: Dr. Ojen Masrour on December 17, 2015

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) "is the most common functional bowel disorder and affects up to 20% of the US population." Getting relief from the very uncomfortable and often painful symptoms of IBS can be as straightforward as making changes in diet, exercise, stress management and natural supplementation. A holistic approach to treatment can offer permanent and sustainable symptom relief for even long-time sufferers.
Since we don’t have any fences in our bodies, the types of foods we eat can have an affect (either positive or negative) on our ailments and vice versa. For some Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) sufferers, specific types of food can be a trigger for some or all of their symptoms. For others, the food triggers are less certain or uncertain.
Constipation Relief
Fiber helps relieve constipation and can easily be increased in the daily diet. The following are examples of foods rich in fiber:
  • Fresh vegetables – carrots, leafy greens, peas cabbage, broccoli
  • Wheat bran
  • Whole grain breads and cereals
  • Fresh fruits – pears, apples, raspberries
  • Beans – kidney, garbanzo, pinto
Gassy Foods - Avoid or Consume in Moderation
  • Beans
  • Cabbage
  • Sugarless gum
  • Sugarless candy
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
Regular exercise can lessen the severity of your IBS symptoms and greatly improve your energy level, emotional wellbeing and improve your sleep. Examples of physical activity are:
  • Walking
  • Bicycling
  • Jogging
  • Swimming

Stress Management
Poor emotional health (including stress, anxiety and depression) can be a trigger and even major cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Taking steps to reduce stress can keep your symptoms under control and might even prevent them from coming back.
Natural Supplements
Fiber supplements such as Metagenics MetaFiber® can be taken when needed to increase fiber intake. It’s important to stay hydrated while taking any supplements and drink enough liquids so that the color of your urine is clear (like water) to light yellow.
Psyllium – Comes from a shrub-like plant, used as a laxative, also available as Metagenics Herbulk®
